Plants Vs Zombies
Since first getting a smart phone I’ve tried to keep fairly up to date with the most recent hot properties in games, this is made easy by the modest price point on most titles. There is no other game on my phone that has continued to entertain and delight like Plants Vs Zombies. The gameplay is hugely addictive but allows for very casual play, unlike many others which spam you with notifications every half hour. The team at Popcap constructed a quirky world with a great sense of humor and excellent art style.
This personal piece was created just for the pure fun of adapting the games fantastic style into something that has closer resemblance to my more realistic work. I was very concious throughout the process that the image should still evoke some of the cartoonish elements and humour which make the game so unique. It was challenging to keep the balance of realism vs cartoon in check while preserving the original character designs, but the identifiable props made this process much easier. One of the most enjoyable parts of this painting was the freedom provided to do something a little bit silly. So much of the science fiction and fantasy genre is locked into the notion of “gritty realism” that it’s often hard to find the opportunity to explore a subject matter which is more slapstick. Painting salivating plants and baby zombies in garbage cans riding giant brute zombies isn’t something that’s in my usual wheelhouse and was so much fun!
Here’s some of the thumbnails I explored before starting the piece. The notion of the plants turning the tables and being threatening to the zombies was very interesting to me and was the major inspiration for the final piece.
